Technology – Can’t Live With It; Can’t Live Without It

by Journey to Health Program Director, Becky Anderson

There are a lot of pieces of technology we have access to that can make our lives easier. I want to discuss one that I feel is most beneficial to this journey we are on together: seeking a healthier life.

The smart watch.

I was resistant to the trend when they first came out. I didn’t even like wearing a regular watch. But I got an Apple Watch for Christmas years ago, and now I cannot imagine a day of not wearing it. What does mine do for me that is so important?

If I’ve been sedentary for a specified amount of time (that I determine), my watch basically tells me that I’m being lazy and to get up and move.

I love that I set daily goals of how many minutes I have exercised, how many calories I have burned, and how long I’ve been standing. With a tap of my watch face, I can quickly see how many steps I have since midnight of that day.

Being completely nerdy and transparent, there’s A LOT of satisfaction when I “close my rings for the day.” This means that all three of my daily goals have been met. My watch will do a little show to also celebrate closing my rings for the day.

Some of the saddest moments for me are when I realize during a workout that I forgot to start my watch. So, basically, none of that exercise counted because my watch wasn’t tracking it.

I may sound as if I’m exaggerating, but I’m really not. My watch has helped keep me accountable as far as staying active.

What works for you?

There are so many cool, techy things available nowadays. I bet some of you have some really unique gear that helps you stay on track. Find what works for you and use it the best you can to keep you moving along this weight loss road you are on.
