Exercise? I thought you said “extra fries!”

by Journey to Health Program Director, Becky Anderson

How in the world am I supposed to get exercise into my busy days?

We are busy people! We have duties at work, duties at home, plus we have to squeeze in time to eat and sleep. When am I supposed to find time to fit in any exercise at all?

These are things I not only hear regularly, but things I have found myself saying.

As a life-long athlete, I don’t feel like myself if I don’t find a way to get some kind of physical activity in on a daily basis. I have developed a trick that works for me, and I hope it will work for you.

I schedule a time to do something for exercise every day. I even set an alarm on my phone. I make sure that I do SOMETHING for 10 minutes at that time. Instead of allowing myself to make an excuse to skip it, I tell myself that I can surely do something for 10 minutes. Go for a walk, go up and down my stairs, stretch, jog in place, go for a bike ride. Doing ANYTHING for 10 minutes is better than doing nothing. More times than not, those 10 minutes become 20 minutes, and sometimes they even become 30 minutes. No matter what you are able to do, you will feel better for finding a way to cross that off your list. Do this daily for a few weeks and now it has become a habit. Remember, no excuses.

Sometimes to improve lifestyle choices, we have to trick ourselves. If it helps you for accountability, email me each day what you did for your 10 minutes. Emailing me daily for a few weeks can help solidify that habit.
