What is body dysmorphia?

by Journey to Health Program Director, Becky Anderson

It is very true–we are our own worst enemy. People can put so much time, energy, money and effort into getting to a healthier weight, but they still see their bodies as they were when they started this journey.

Body Dysmorphia Disorder (BDD) is a real diagnosis. BDD is a mental health condition where a person becomes fixated on aspects of their appearance that others may not even notice. BDD is common for people that lose a significant amount of weight. They look in the mirror and cannot picture themselves in their new, healthier body.

If this mindset continues and does not improve, the help of a licensed clinical counselor may be in order. Talk to your primary care physician about this. Do not wait. I promise that that same doctor is THRILLED with your health improvements from your hard work; he or she does not want your mental health to suffer.
