Cookie Cutters and Weight Loss
by Journey to Health Program Director, Becky Anderson
I have said more times than I can count that there is not one set program to lose weight that works for everyone. It is the same way with Journey To Health. We are not a cookie cutter program. I am not going to tell you that there are a certain number of specific steps to follow for a delegated amount of time and, POOF, you will reach your goal weight. What I will tell you is that you may never reach your goal weight. And that that is ok.
Not only is there not a cookie cutter program to help you lose weight, there’s also not a magical weight you can obtain that will make your life perfect. A person’s goal weight should be a range of 5-10 pounds that you can not only see yourself obtaining, but you also feel confident that you can maintain your weight in that range. Your goal weight should NOT be what a chart tells you that you should weigh, such as the Body Mass Index chart. A BMI is simply a calculation of your height and weight. A BMI does not take into account a person’s age, sex, body fat %, nor anything except their height and weight.
When I discuss goal weights with participants, I always encourage them to start off with a goal to lose 10% of their current body weight. After accomplishing that, look at another 10%. This makes the journey more reasonable and feel more attainable.
Now about those cookies…
